I first
studied photography at Yale with Walter Rosenbaum. He made me take a photo
with an ancient wooden box camera, with the black head cloth, the film box, the
whole deal. At that time I weighed about 105 pounds with my shoes on.
I was 'slight' as it was politely termed at home. Anyway, Walter stood by
the glass doors and laughed as I struggled to carry this Ansel Adams outfit as
far as I could. I got across the little creek in front of the lab, put up the tripod, and took
the best photograph of a tree stump that has ever been done.
It should
be in the Louvre.
My fondness
for photography is rooted in my intrigue of magic.
I still don't know how
it works.

"Willow Slough"
22X30"
$550 on Arches paper
Willow slough is a draining slough for NW Indiana. I swam in the troughs when they were creating it. The dirt here is mainly sand. I once caught the record bluegill here. Lots of snakes swim in the water. Peaceful. |

"Iroquois Swamp - where I learned to swim"
image: 91/2"X28", on paper 22X30
$550.
Digital photograph. The Iroquois is a dangerous river -- many have met misadventure in it. It is a draining river for a swamp. My Uncle Ray was terrified of water-- he couldn't swim, neither could my Mom. One day, he threw my dog Trix in the river and said, "See how that dog swims?" "If you do just like that, you'll never drown." Then he picked me up by my overalls and threw me in. I swam like Trix and did not drown. To this day I love to swim and am not afraid. |

"night arrow"
5X9" 8X10"
$100, $125
My husband often has to work nights. I ride along to keep him company. I'm struck by the emptiness of night roads, even in the Phoenix valley, and the implied danger of rattlesnakes by the warm road, very wicked people, and unknown stories. |

"Mennonite Land"
image: 8 3/4"X28" on paper 22X30"
$550
Digital photograph. I started out life among the Mennonite on a tenant farm in Indiana. My Grandpa farmed with horses until he died. This is in front of my Aunt Sarah's farm. It looks the same as it ever was. |

"Night Cloud Highway"
8X10"/ 22X30"
$125/$450
Digital photograph. Such contrast between sky and road.
Both seem empty and lonely, but the sky has promise. |
