artist ruminations: This page will probably change a lot. As I grow older I think more and more about my childhood. Tenant farm (dirt poor, as they say at home); small town: 4 streets: 1st street, 2nd street, 3rd street, and 4th street. We had a one room house in town that my uncles built; no electricity, no running water on the farm. Slept in the haymow with a border collie named Charlie and the wild kittens that no one could touch. Slept in a chicken coop for several years after that. (there were no chickens in it) Slept on corn husk mattresses on the floor and lay still so I wouldn't startle the mice that came up to sniff my face. I can still feel their whiskers on my lips. I didn't know I was poor until I went to school. I worked from the time I could stand upright. Yes, I've milked cows, detasseled corn (worst job in the universe), delivered papers, soda jerk, waitress, popcorn girl, babysitter, librarian, and drove a trash truck. Married; a child, now married. Studied: John Herron, Yale, Indiana University, Arizona State, Printmaking Center, Santa Fe. I've had a very classical education for the most part and many of my teachers are world famous artists. B.F.A./M.F.A. with 32+ credits in graduate education. Like my Mom says, "You could have been a real doctor". But I followed my bent and went into Art Studio. Its made me happy. I've taught K- university graduate for over 25 years. My connection to nature sustains me. Animals and trees and rocks and dirt are my mainstays. My touch stones are the look in my mule's eyes. There in that wise glow I see and understand everything I need to.
